COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course is designed to explore practical contemporary synthesis techniques in the context of creating a musical composition. It focuses on the musical and emotional implications of synthesizer components and techniques: envelopes, LFO’s, filters, oscillators, modulation, and audio effects. Frequent peer feedback on both the synthesizer patches and musical composition help to develop the student’s technical and musical capabilities.
At the conclusion of the course the student will have a solid foundation in practical contemporary synthesis techniques within an industry standard synthesizer, will have created a piece of music to demonstrate his or her skills, and will have developed the ability to critique synthesizer patches based on their appropriateness, emotional impact, category, and expressiveness.

Session 1: Getting Started And Creating Draft 1
Students will submit a mock up of their ideas for their final project. This will help them to set their goals and begin to think about the overall vision for their song.

Session 2: Creating Custom Patches
After reflecting on their mock up from the previous session, students will have an idea of the types of sounds they want in their song. For the second week, students will start to craft their own patches to use in their compositions and submit them for peer review.

Session 3: From Preset To Perfect
Students will use their own, classmates', and/or factory patches and tweak them to fit their songs. They will be asked to report on the process: what wasn’t right about the sound and what they needed to do to make it perfect for their songs.
